DxO Labs has developed a new scale for digital camera image quality performance, called DxOMark Sensor, to serve as an additional tool to help photographers rank and compare digital cameras. This scale is based on three underlying metrics, Color Depth, Dynamic Range and Low-Light ISO, each one tied to a real-life photographic scenario: landscape, studio & portrait, and photojournalism & sport.

The DxOMark Sensor scale aggregates the performance values of its three constituent metrics, Color Depth, Dynamic Range, and Low-Light ISO. Each metric is associated with its real-life photographic scenario (studio/portrait, landscape and sports/action respectively), and compiles the results of thousands of objective digital camera sensor measurements. On the DxOMark Sensor scale, the higher the score, the better. The scale is kept open, anticipating that sensor technology will continuously improve over time.
